My grandmother; who I lovingly called Nanny lived in the same neighborhood as my family and I. It was a wonderful beach community that although we didn’t have sidewalks it was still safe to ride a bike or walk to her house. I went often and spent many hours hanging out with my her. My grandmother did not work outside of the home after my mother was born. She never drove a car but yet we went on many adventures; most of which happened inside of her home. We never went to the park together; yet she taught me how to climb and swing. She never took me to Ocean City; yet I went to the beach almost everyday of summer vacation. She never drove me to a mall; but yet I took the bus with her to huge departments stores in the city. She never took me for a manicure or pedicure but yet my fingers and toes were painted often. We never played video games yet I learned to play just about every game that Milton Bradley made. We never went to Michaels or AC Moore for craft supplies yet I learned to sew, decorate cakes, cross stitch and make candles. We never went to an Orioles game together but I rarely missed a game as we would sit on the front porch listening on her transistor radio.
Spending time with my grandmother helped to shape me into the woman I am today. She taught me so much about unconditional love, she taught me how to be a great wife and mother, she taught me that the way to a mans heart is truly through his stomach. She taught me to always put God first. She taught me to be kind to others and to help others in need. She has and always will be an inspiration to me.
I lost my grandmother in 2013 she was 94 years young. Although she is no longer here with me her spirit lives on in me in everything I do and say.
